Book Review

The book was boring at the beginning, but once you start getting to the interesting parts, it keeps on getting better. A very touching piece of literature, to be honest. Pictures a typical, slightly traumatized teenager very well.

Mind Map

A mind map of the main character of the story The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield.

Character Analysis

J.D Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye, published in 1951, depicts the misadventures of a teenager named Holden Caulfield, who has been having trouble with school and friends for quite a while. Fater running away from school, Holden finds himself in both good and bad situations as he ventures around in the city of New York, such as dancing with a few women and later getting beaten up by a pimp named Maurice.
No matter where he goes, Holden begins to feel only worse about things in life, such as ”phony people,” who are not honest with themselves. Holden’s disilusinment and mental degradation stem from the death of his younger brother Allie, who has died prior to the beginning of the story. He was very fond of his brother, as seen how he reacts to people who left a funeral session due to rain: ”All the visitors could get in their cars and turn on their radios and all and then go some place nice for dinner. Everybody except Allie. I couldn’t stand it.”

Holden managers to incite rage and confusion with his words, and the only person he can really talk to without the need to throw any ideas about changing landscapes is his younger sister, Phoebe. The reason for this might be that he was as close to Phoebe as he was to Allie. In the end, Holden comes to accept the fact that he is mentally unstable and ends the story with a warning not to tell anyone anything, as ”If you do, you start missing everybody”.

As a person, Holden is cynical, frustrated, and slightly depressed. Thinking often about a girl named Jane Gallagher, he becomes especially worried when his friend Stradlater goes on a date with her. It is clear that Holden is troubled and scared about the concept of growing up, this being visible in his sudden and unexpected actions, such as going on a date with a girl named Sally, then suddenly leaving her behind and getting drunk in a bar before wandering off in the city again.
